What we look for when employing dog handlers

To be considered for a handler position, it is essential that you have:

  • A positive and professional attitude, and excellent work ethic
  • A valid Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervisor licence
  • A National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) qualification
  • Recent continuation training records
  • A good understanding of legal guidelines for public safety
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Public Liability Insurance (where applicable)
  • Proof of the right to work in the UK

We also expect our handlers to operate within animal welfare laws and always show care and respect to their canine partners. All applicants will be screened and vetted according to the British Standards Industry code of practice BS 8517.

How do I become a dog handler?

What qualifications do I need to become a dog handler?

We do require all our handlers to hold a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervisor licence and have a National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) qualification. 

How many hours does a dog and handler work for?

In this industry, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer, as it depends on the contract we have with our client. Due to the nature of the job, you must be happy to work unsociable hours and long shifts.
